In Ethiopia, Shigo was our guide and he was such a blessing! His deep knowledge of cultures, languages and tribes in the Omo Valley allowed us to have the most wonderful experience! Shigo is very informative, accommodating, respectful and sweet and he is always welcome in all the tribes, which makes his guests also welcome into the local communities. This subsequently makes your experience as authentic as possible - you get to interact with the tribe members, share stories (being himself from the Banna tribe, Shigo speaks many of the tribal languages), sing with them, visit their huts, take pictures with them, ask them questions, etc.

With regard to logistics, everything was very well organized. We stayed in very good hotels and the restaurants for our lunch were chosen taking into consideration our “Western stomachs”. George was available on the phone at all times and he quickly and efficiently sorted out a couple of mishaps we encountered during our trip.

I love seeing new places but hate getting there. Anyways, We met a representative of Exciting Ethiopia Tours at some travel show near her work in SF. She was excited about it and I  thought “not a chance.” I never considered going to Africa. Nothing against the country at all but to be honest always felt like it would be dangerous and going there just never even crossed my mind. She kept poking at me to “just look into it a little bit”, I did and slowly over the course of months of doing some research, I found myself changing my mind, I say slowly because it took about 5 months before I agreed. After a long but surprisingly smooth and hassle free plane ride or two we landed in Addis Ababa. Wow, I’m in Ethiopia and I’m in Africa. We were greeted by a man by the name of George Ashebir at the airport. He is the Touring Operator for Exciting Ethiopia Tours. We explored the city and what a treat that was. We ended up George’s village. What a beautiful yet simple life they live. I took for granted the things I have here in the states. Material items we have more here. What they lack in material items they more than make up for with their family/friend bonds, traditions, ceremonies etc. They also brew the best coffee you will ever sip in your life. I travel a lot. I don’t always write reviews. I unfortunately only do when I have had a great experience or a bad experience. I have to work on that. But, if I could recommend one place, one time, one experience for someone out there that might be considering a life changing experience, do your self a favor and call these guys. It was very easy to reach George and he understood exactly what we wanted. Unfortunately he could not join us for the tour itself as he had been summoned by the government to attend a meeting in Botswana - however his substitute, Shigo, was excellent, from one of the tribes in the valley and he made it very easy to go to many villages and meet villagers in each one instead of merely taking photos and racing on to the next village. As a result we had a much richer experience. Shigo was informative and entertaining and the drivers were excellent as well. I would recommend a visit to the Lower Omo valley and strongly recommend that you use Exciting Ethiopia Tours.
